The Wannabe Warrior -
Chapter 148
Zane POV
‘Alpha, we were attacked by unknown people. They were not rogues, and I did not recognise their scent. We have a few casualties but no deaths, and we have about one hundred dead attackers.’ Mitch started his report in one long breath.
‘Did you replace Emery?’ Ezekiel asked hopefully.
‘No, but he was here. That we know for sure.’ Was the quick reply.
‘What do you mean?’ Jonathon asked, his face stern.
‘Madison is gone, he broke the door down and has taken her.’ Graham interrupted over the communicators; you could hear how upset he was and we all gasped.
‘’WHAT?’ I shouted in agony at those words, my beautiful mate is in the hands of Emery the traitor and I am here safe and sound. I felt my tears roll down my cheeks as I vaguely remember dad pulling me into his arms and rubbing my back to sooth me.
‘Tell us what you know.’ Jonathon asked in his cold voice, and I knew the man was just holding on to his emotions himself.
Mitch explained what he saw and what Madison had told him, and the paperwork she said was urgent for us to have.
‘Do you have any attackers alive?’ dad questioned thoughtfully.
‘We did, but they had some sort of poison and killed themselves. Before we can question them, they have a scent we have never come across before, and Zakary assures us they are not from the Deep Earth people. Their clothing is plain, and is homemade style, I would say, with no labels or markers of any kind on the dead, two had tattoos and they are just common ones, no pack markers that we can replace.’ Mitch finished his report.
‘Get Zakary to clean up the area and post patrols and get you and what men you have left back here; we need to regroup and I need to see that paperwork that Madison was so desperate from me to have that was worth risking her life to let you know about it. That delay cost her dearly.’ Dad ordered and looked over at Gerome.
‘Does Madison have a tracer on her?’ he asked hopefully.
‘No, it looks like they took her phone off of her, it is still in the room she stayed the night in. We just have to wait for her to contact us. Don’t worry, we know she lives because Zane would have known of her death. We have to trust in her war abilities and wait. I know that is a hard thing to do.’ Gerome said sadly. His friend was captive and everyone was onboard to replace and get her back.
‘We will wait for Mitch to arrive and give us a better report. Till then, go get some rest if you can. None of us can help Madison if we are falling asleep. I need you all rested and ready to tackle what ever is coming our way.’ Dad ordered and though we all agreed with dad, none of us will really sleep much tonight.
I showered and climbed into bed, feeling very emotional. One moment angry, the next, I am nearly in tears and then, fear of what they might do to her, and lastly, the hopelessness of not knowing and not being able to help her anyway.
Tossing and turning for hours, I got up and walked to the balcony and looked out at the full moon above, shining brightly, and tried to mind-link my mate. When I gave up with that, I tried to link up with my wolf, calling him home that I needed him out mate had been captured and I needed him to try and get hold of Madison’s wolf. But he did not respond.
I felt tired and alone, even though I had a packhouse full of caring people, I couldn’t help how I was feeling.
Looking up at the moon, I felt a change in me, as I thought of how Madison had told me once, that if ever I was missing her, look up at the moon and know she would be seeing the same moon and I was. I smiled a sad smile at that memory and would hold onto that thought until she returned to me. We would share the view of the moon together.
Giving up on sleep, I ventured down to the kitchens after I had dressed, and found Mary in there, cooking up a storm.
‘Are we having a party Mary?’ I asked, at all the food she was preparing.
‘No Zane, I am worried and sad, and when I am worried, I cook cakes and sweet things.’ Mary replied, not looking up from her bowl in her arms, as she whipped some egg whites to foam.
I went further into the warm kitchen and wrapped my arms around Mary and the tears she had been holding back, burst like a dam breaking. I removed the bowl from her hands and pulled her into my arms and together wept for our Madison.
