The Wannabe Warrior -
Chapter 189
Zanr POV
I moved out, having sorted us all into groups. I stayed with the Blue River warriors, mainly because they were the only men I trusted. I still did not like the game that Zeek kept playing, and until he stopped playing those games, I was not going to trust him. He was not the alpha but tried to bluff his way around it.
Even Peggy had rolled her eyes a few times, and I felt that if things went badly, she would step in and take over. The men and their stupid pride, it made no difference to us who was the alpha, as long as someone took the lead. That was all the men needed, and that is why the Blue River warriors stuck to us too.
They knew Madison and I would not lead them astrav and I would have their backs too, if it came down to a fight.
I had heard them softly complaining about Zeek’s odd behaviour, and hoped it did not hurt us when things got serious. I needed everyone on’board when the fighting started, and Zeek’s ego needed to be under control when that happened.
Zeek and a group of his went to the right, and the Blue River warriors and I went to the left.
Alex and Zakary went down the middle.
I had no real idea about this area, only what was on the Diorama and, though I enjoyed the details if given, it would not show small pot holes and other small dangers, they only had what they considered important in them and I did not like the feeling of being in a strange place with little knowledge of the different kind of dangers that may be lurking around every bush.
The Blue River Warriors were calm and crept around the place almost silently, they were in their element, they loved going out and tracking and hunting. I had my mic in my ear and so did the Blue River warriors, so we could talk, not just to each other, but Gerome would be recording all of this, in case we needed something later, something we had not shared with Zeek. He knew about the mics, as we discussed them back in Alex’s pack, but not that we had one on each of us, and I was not about to give him more information than necessary.
It is hard to have someone you don’t trust looking after your back.
It was an uncomfortable feeling.
I made it to the other side of the pack-grounds, still not seeing anyone, which I thought was strange.
You would have thought you would have come across some patrols by now.
‘Madison, any sight of patrols in your area?’ knowing Madison was out and about doing her own thing.
‘I have smelt them, about ten coming your way, hold back in the bushes, and you will see them in about five minutes.’ She replied and that made me feel better, maybe we were ahead of the patrol and that is why I had not seen any.
I relayed the information to the rest of my group and sat back and waited, and true to the timing Madison had given, ten men walked slowly past where we were hidden, and waited for them to pass and, at a distance, followed behind them, trying to gauge what was going on. It does not make any sense.
They did not seem to notice us, or if they did, they were playing it cool.
1 suggested we hold a little further back and I did not like the feeling I was getting and the men agreed that this was not a normal place and it had the hairs on the back of their necks sticking up. This was the first time the Blue River Warriors had had any negative views on anything, and so we agreed to hold back. One suggested we climb the trees nearby, and with that agreement, we all scaled the trees and four trees, to be exact, and we sat high enough to see into the compound and watched the patrol return and enter a room, to the right of the compound, in the direction of where Zeek and his men had gone, they should be nearby that building and hopefully hear the report from the patrol.
We saw Gladys come out of the building and look around, as if she was expecting something.
She then looked at her watch and then turned and looked down the only road into the compound.
Soon the sound of vehicles was heard coming closer. Soon three large trucks could be seen coming down the driveway, and headed towards Gladys.
She looked around again and that made me suspicious.
What was she looking for?
‘Madison, three trucks are arriving.’ I called out to her in our mind-link.
On it.’ She replied and I pondered what she meant by that but, did not think to ask.
The voice of one of the Blue River warriors came over the mic.
Each truck holds about twenty men and looks like they were mercenaries.’
And chatter over the mic began, as other warriors confirmed what they could see.
We were going to have mercenaries, something I had not anticipated.
‘Dad.’ I called out to him.
‘Son?’ he replied almost instantly.
‘Gladys just had three truckloads of mercenaries arrive.’
‘Back off and come home, we don’t need you to get involved in that sort of fight, you don’t have the equipment to fight them. Let us regroup here and work out how we are going to tackle this.’
“Thanks dad, I will talk to Peggy and let her know.’
‘Madison?’
‘Yep.’
‘Dad calling us back home, we need better equipment to fight against mercenaries.’
‘Agreed, get you back at the entrance.’
I gave them the order to retreat and we headed back to the hidden cave entrance. As we approached, Madison called out.
‘Stop, now.’ And we all stopped and waited.
‘Let’s go around, something is wrong, I can smell a lot of rogues around here.’ Madison said, and we sniffed the air and could not smell anything.
We all went around to the other entrance and it was safe.
Once inside, Madison joined us and put her finger to her lips, signalling us to stay quiet and again we waited for her to give us the go ahead.
‘Six rogues in here, be careful and stay together. How they got in I don’t know. Maybe the others have been caught.’ Madison said over the mic, in a very low voice.
Our guys nodded, we closed the entrance so no more could make their way in behind us, unless they knew how to open the doors. And as a group, we. slowly walked towards the smell of the rogues, with Madison leading the way, having the best nose among us all.
As we neared the end of the tunnel, Madison signalled for us to stop again, and put up her fingers to say they were near the exit of the tunnel and I watched as Madison, who was still in her wolf form, changed her colour and blended into the wall.
