Alissa's POV

After traveling for days without end, I finally arrived at the city I wanted to be in.

As soon as I got off the bus, I looked around at the sky high buildings.

This is the biggest city I've ever been in my entire life.

The thing is I can't even research about the details about the city because I didn't have a phone or any gudget.

I started walking to replace a cheap looking hotels, apartments but most of the buildings were tall and expensive looking.

I walked for more than hour and went through different alleys and sidewalk until I found what seemed like a small old building with written 'space for rent' inside on it.

I already expect the worst as I knocked on a door and and an old lady came to greet me.

"Good day. I'm inquiring for the space for rent" I said.

"Oh dear. Come on in" she said and let me in.

I might possibly be getting myself into some kind of weird death but I really just needed a really cheap place to stay at.

My money is literally less than half the amount I initially bought and I still need to do so many things.

I'll take the risk.

I got inside the house and was surprised that the house actually seemed okay.

It wasn't too shabby and stuffy. It was actually really clean but it was obvious that the house was old because of the out of date decors.

"I have one spare bedroom that I've been wanting to rent out. It was my son's bedroom but he passed away due to cancer" she stated as she stopped in front of a door. "Oh. I'm so sorry to hear that. My condolences" I said.

I was still very cautious of my surroundings but the woman seemed nice and harmful.

"This is an old building that I've been living in for more than 50 years. The first floor is my husband and I's property while the floors upstairs have different owners" she explained. I nodded in understanding.

We toured the floor together and it just seemed like a one-storey house inside of a 5 storey building.

It was nice and everything was already provided.

It was definitely a lot nicer than I expected it to be so I was a bit nervous on how much the rent would cost.

When the woman told me the rent price, I was really surprised to replace out how low it was.

"I'm not asking for too much but along with the rent, all I'm asking for is for company for a morning walk. I have no other conditions and requirements" she said.

My heart felt a slight ache when she said that because the loneliness in her eyes were evident.

As we talked earlier, she also mentioned that her husband died even before her son.

She's been alone all this time and she only posted the rent sign last year.

"I don't think I have a lot of time to live. For the past years since my son died, all I ever did was stay at home, look at the outside from the glass of my home and grieve for my husband and son" she said.

"I atleast want to spend my remaining few years breathing in fresh air and letting the sunlight touch my skin. Even if it's just for an hour and two every day" she told me.

She gave me a sad smile and I felt like hugging her.

"I'd like that a lot" I said and she smiled. It reached her ear this time.

We smiled at each other.

"I'm so sorry, dear but I believe I haven't asked your name" she said.

"Oh uh my name is..." I paused.

"Lisa. My name is Lisa" I said.

The old woman smiled.

"And my name is Mildred" she introduced herself.

I smiled.

The woman asked me when I can move in and I informed her that I can move in immediately if it was fine with her.

She was a bit surprised to replace out that I didn't have a lot of stuff with me but did not further question it.

I paid the first rent and then settled in the bedroom I was given.

I took a quick shower first because I was filthy then, I changed into a set of fresh clothes and flopped down on the bed.

It was the most comfortable bed I've had in days.

I immediately fell asleep and when I woke up, I woke up to the aromatic smell of food.

For a very long time, my mouth has not watered and craved for anything more.

I got up and went outside my room and followed the scent to the living room.

"Lisa, dear. I bought pizza and chicken. I believe this is what youngsters like you like to eat?" Mildred said cheerfully.

"I'm unable to cook these but I do make other dishes that I'd love for you to try in the future" she said enthusiastically.

I smiled.

"Thank you, Mildred. I think this is amazing and I'd love to taste your cooking. I can cook as well but probably not as good as you and am willing to share my own recipes" I said. Mildred smiled and nodded.

"I'd love that, dear" she said.

"Now, why don't you join me and let's get into this together" she giggled.

Mildred and I sat down together and we talked as we ate. We talked about our cooking experiences and dishes we wanted to try.

I never got to meet my grandparents in both my parents' side because they passed even before I was born.

But I feel like this is how it would feel to have a grandmother.

It feels warm and cozy.

It makes me feel some type of way and I liked it so much.

The searching for hours was definitely worth it and I couldn't be more glad to br where I am right now.

Right now, I feel less glum.

"Uhm...Mildred" I said.

"I know that it's a little bit late but would you want to go for a night walk?" I asked politely.

Mildred smiled.

"I would like that. I think the sky would look beautiful tonight" she said.

Mildred and I agreed to take a walk outside after dinner.

I fixed the table up and we left the home.

Mildred and I started walking and I matched her pace.

"If I remember correctly, there's a park nearby. I think it will be nice to go there, don't you think?" she suggested.

I do remember walking past a park when I was searching for accommodation.

"I think that's a good idea" I said.

Mildred smiled happily as we walked.

It was a slow and relaxing walk.

I've been walking all around for days and this was the first walk that I wasn't rushing whatsoever to get somewhere.

Mildred looked up at the sky.

"I was right. The sky does look beautiful tonight" she commented.

I just smiled a little but didn't look up.

"Tell me, Lisa. What suddenly brought you to the city?" Mildred suddenly asked.

I bit my lower lip and she looked at me.

"Oh is it it a sensitive topic? I apologize. You don't need to answer that" she said.

"No, it's fine" I assured her as I thought of the answer.

"What brought me to the city?" I repeated.

"I moved to the city to start a new life. A total reset. And out of all the places I could think of, I thought that the city was the place that would let me....forget the life I lived in the past" I said. Mildred nodded.

"What kind of place did you leave in before?" she asked curiously.

"I used to live in a place that was filled with trees, greenery in general. We had cabins and we were far away from everyone else" I said.

"That seems like such a peaceful place to be in" she said with a smile.

"It was" I said.

"Well, do you like what you're seeing now?" she asked.

I looked at the buildings around me.

"It's something to get used to, I'll give you that" I told her.

Mildred chuckled.

"The city can be quite the sight as well. I hope that you'll be able to replace a certain peace here as well" she said.

I smiled a little.

"I hope so too" I said.

Eventually, Mildred and I reached the nearby park and we sat on a bench.

Mildred looked up while I looked at the park itself.

"The stars and the moon look beautiful together, don't you think so?" Mildred said and she glanced at me.

She noticed that I wasn't even looking at the sky.

"Don't you want to see?" she said.

I shook my head.

"I'm not really fond of the night sky anymore" I said.

"Why is that?" she asked curiously.

I sighed.

"It reminds me of bad memories" I said.

Mildred looked at me sadly and she reached out and held my hand.

"Why did you suggest taking a walk then?" she said.

I looked at her and gave her a small smile.

"I figured you'd like it. Also, it's my way of saying thank you for dinner" I said.

Mildred's eyes watered as she smiled.

"I do. I do like it. In fact, I love it. Thank you, Lisa dear" she said.

I smiled at her.

"Now, we should head back. It's dark after all" she said and I agreed.

We made our way back and as we did, I sensed someone following us.

My brows furrowed a little but I didn't tell Mildred anything just yet.

I didn't want to cause her panic.

I knew there was someone following us and I definitely did not feel good about it so I held on to Mildred's arm.

"Is everything okay, dear?" Mildred asked as she looked at me.

I gave Mildred an assuring smile.

"Everything is going to be fine" I assured her and she looked at me a bit confused.

There are 2 people following us. I can sense and smell the 2 men.

I slightly increased the pace with Mildred and when we were almost back home, instead of stopping, I kept going. "But this is-" Mildred was about to say.

"Mildred, please keep walking for me and don't look back no matter what" I said as I removed my arm on hers.

Mildred looked at me confused and nervous but nodded in agreement anyway.

I looked back and the 2 men came running at us and I ran towards them as well.

The other guy tried to grab me while the other tried to go after Mildred.

I avoided them both and grabbed the other guy and kicked the other one.

He came flying to a wall and I threw the other guy to the same wall.

Their bodies collided with the wall with a groan and I walked to them.

They tried to stand up again and attack me but I avoided their attack.

I caught the first guy's foot amd twisted it.

He screamed but I immediately covered it.

In my mind, I felt disgusted.

Then, I threw him to a wall again and his head hit it and he fell to the ground unconscious.

The last guy's eyes widened as she looked at me and what I did.

I tilted my head to the side as I looked at him.

"You can't try to harass women trying to take a relaxing walk at night" I said.

He looked at me with fear and was about to run when I grabbed him by the hair and smashed his head to wall.

He got knocked out and both of them were on the ground.

I sighed and massaged the bridge of my nose in disbelief.

I accessed a payphone nearby and called the police then I left the guys by the payphone so they can be dealt with.

Then, I caught up to Mildred who was still walking.

I held her arm and she flinched.

"It's okay, Mildred, it's Lisa" I said.

Mildred looked at me and sighed in relief.

"Oh thank ghad. Is everything okay now? What happened?" she asked.

"Nothing to worry about. Let's go home and maybe have some tea or warm milk" I suggested.

Mildred nodded and we made our way back.

I never get a break day and night.

Mildred and I got back safely.

I prepared us our drinks and that's how our night went.
